The Great East Coast Clean Up Returns – May 2025

Tasmania’s iconic Great East Coast Clean Up is back for 2025 – and the call is out for volunteers to roll up their sleeves, gather their communities, and take action to protect and restore our stunning coastline.

Organised by the Landscape Recovery Foundation in partnership with the East Coast Catchments Committee and Clean Up Australia Day, the event will run throughout May 2025, giving individuals, groups, and organisations the flexibility to participate at a time and place that suits them. With Glamorgan Spring Bay, Break O’Day, Sorell and Tasman councils all joining forces, this initiative focuses on the unique challenges – and opportunities – of Tasmania’s East Coast.

“We’re excited to invite new and returning volunteers to get involved,” said Mel Fazackerley from the Landscape Recovery Foundation. “This year, we’re building on the success of past campaigns, where community groups, councils, state agencies and volunteers have worked together to make a real difference. It’s about protecting the natural areas we all love – and building stronger community connections along the way.”

2023 saw a heartening decrease in rubbish volumes in areas like Rocky Hills, a trend organisers hope continues in 2025. From beaches and bush tracks to back roads and waterways, every bag of rubbish collected is a step toward a cleaner, healthier future.

Whether you join an existing local group or register your own activity, everyone can contribute. The Foundation is particularly encouraging clean-ups in harder-to-reach areas, where dumping can go unnoticed, and is working in partnerships with agencies and local councils to tackle these less visible but significant sites.

🧹 How to Get Involved:

  • Register a clean-up site or join an existing one via the Clean Up Australia website:

  • Rally your friends, workplace, school or club for a clean-up

  • Spread the word and share your efforts on social media: #GreatEastCoastCleanUp

This May, let’s work together to leave Tasmania’s East Coast cleaner than we found it.
